Cimaises &+

1,000 km of picture rails!

For 17 years, Christophe, the one and only installer for Cimaises &+, has been installing picture hanging systems in homes, businesses, and sometimes in completely improbable locations. We meet the man many now call "Mr. Picture Rail."

Hello Christophe, can you tell us about your background and your history with Cimaises &+?

"Can you believe it, it all started with a lie... yes, a lie! It was 17 years ago. I had just started my service company when a client called me asking for picture rails. Except, at the time, I had absolutely no idea what a picture rail was!

So I typed "P-I-C-T-U-R-E R-A-I-L" into the internet... with no results. Then I tried with a different spelling, and that's when I finally understood what it was. So I needed to buy some. Since I lived in the 15th arrondissement of Paris and didn't want to go far, I typed "picture rails Paris 15" and that's when I discovered Cimaises &+.

I arrived at the store to buy 50 meters of Classic Plus picture rails. And then, Erik Bonnet asked me: "Do you also install picture rails?" I replied "Yes"... even though it was completely false!"

Today, do you mainly work for individuals or businesses?

"I have more requests from individuals. However, the largest projects in terms of footage are often carried out for businesses."

Which are the most difficult walls to work with?

"The worst are the plasterboard walls glued onto hard walls... a nightmare! Installations at height or in stairwells are also particularly challenging."

What is the most common mistake customers make when installing their own picture rails?

"Many stop the picture rails at the doors, whereas they should be continued above. They also often forget the corner joints. And then you have to be very meticulous when installing picture rails; you have to be careful to keep the ceiling perfectly clean and white."

How long does an installation usually take?

“It really depends on the walls, rooms, and clients. Hard walls take longer. In businesses too, because you have to move from one office to another. Certain picture rails, like the Classic, also require more work. And then there’s all the after-work: cleaning, vacuuming…”

What models do you pose most often?

"Mainly Click Brut. We install far fewer Classics today."

Any particularly unusual request that stuck with you?

"Yes! A client wanted to install picture rails in her shower to hang her shower products. That was quite unexpected!"

Which projects made you the proudest?

"The CNS construction site remains a very strong memory: we installed 1.3 kilometers of picture rails there.

But there's also an installation in a parish house, "Les Sœurs de Saint-Sulpice," in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. It was very high and technically quite challenging. I went back a second time, and for each intervention, they invite me to the private viewing. I find that really nice."

A particularly challenging construction project?

"Yes, at 109 Champs-Élysées, at a notary's office whose owner is passionate about street art. The room was filled with incredible works, with many curved surfaces, and he absolutely wanted to hang picture rails on these curves. It was a real technical challenge."

Another striking pose?

"Without hesitation, Maison Renoma. It's a project that particularly stood out to me, both for its identity and for the technical challenges it presented. Every detail had to be precisely thought out to respect the spirit of the place. It's the kind of project that demands real expertise, excellent coordination, and great rigor. Beyond the final result, it's also a human and professional experience that I remember fondly."

You must have some construction site stories...

"I have several!

One day, I installed picture rails at Van Cleef. There was an exhibition with cows in the living room, and the client absolutely wanted me to work in socks... even though I had to climb a stepladder!

Another time, I got stuck on a balcony during an installation... because I used to smoke back then.

And then there was this job at the artist Maxime.L's place. I rang the doorbell, a gentleman in a bathrobe opened it, and we immediately hit it off. We realized we were both PSG fans. At the end of the installation, I ended up eating sausage and drinking red wine with him. A totally improbable moment!"

There were also some prestigious venues…

"Yes, especially one installation in a large embassy in Paris. I saw a 100 m² walk-in closet there, filled with luxury bags, shoes, and clothes... quite impressive!"

If you could hang picture rails anywhere, where would it be?

"At the Palace of Versailles, without a doubt!"

Slightly unusual question... if you had to estimate, how many kilometers of picture rails have you installed in your career?

"Oh, easily 1,000 km of picture rails!"

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a career in this field?

"I would tell him to go further than simply installing picture rails. I always try to connect with people, to get to know them. Some clients have even become friends.

Clients come back because they are happy with the work, of course, but also with the human experience. You have to be more than someone who just 'comes to do a job'. Ultimately, you also have to sell people an experience."

And when asked if he ever tires of art galleries, Christophe replies with a smile:

"I've installed so many that now, every time I go somewhere, I think, 'Ah, I installed that one!' In fact, some people call me 'Mr. Picture Rails.'"
