What is called a picture rail?
By definition, the picture rail is a molding positioned near the ceiling.
Historically, the dictionary describes the picture rail as a molding, generally made of wood, positioned halfway up a wall, having a dual function, decorative and protective.
Once raised near the ceiling, its profile allowed hooks to be hung there to hang pictures.
By analogy, the walls of a gallery are called picture rails.
Today, the name "picture rail" refers to the entire device used to hang pictures on a wall without drilling it with hooks or pegs.
The expressions "To have the honors of the picture rail", "To dress the picture rails", "To garnish the picture rails" have the meaning of Exhibiting.
However, the word "cimaise" is largely unknown to the general public. It is not uncommon to hear the words "rod", "rail", "bar", "profile", and "baguette" used to refer to it.
Even more confusing, there is very often confusion between the horizontal wall rail and the rod intended to hang from it.
